RGM-79V GM VTOL is a proof of concept test of additional equipment for the RX-78, RX-79 and RGM-79 series Mobile Suits. Equipment includes Fixed-wing backpack with dual Electric Motor powered variable-direction propellers, 2 shin mounted aerodynamic stabilizers. This Prototype was developed in response to reports of Top Secret Zeon Gouf Flight-type project.
Prototype was built on early production GM chassis, upgraded with RX-79 spec compact reactor and RX-79 replacement head module. Prototype demonstrated that the propellers eliminated the need for liquid fueled vernier, and the weight savings from removal of the fuel tanks did not necessitate the removal of armor demonstrated on other Vernier-based flight-type mobile suits.

I used the wings and tail fins from a 1:72 scale V-22 Osprey kit to modify this GM. The GM Head was used on my RX-79(G) kit entered last month, so I used the RX-79(G) head on this kit, since the VTOL Equipment was meant for both the GM and Gundam MS lines. I stretched the wings by about 2 inches around the backpack that I scratch-built from 1mm pla-plate. The extension was made by skinning .25mm pla-plate over 9 "ribs" making up the inner frame, the entire surface was then covered in putty and sanded to a uniform shape. Tail fins were glued to the shins facing backwards at an approx. 45ยบ angle, putty was used to fill in the gaps and obtain a uniform shape. Vents on the upper arms were removed and replaced with wire mesh. The head was also modded to look up more effectively and wire mesh was added under the chin. Colors used were Mr. Color White, Aluminum, and Chrome Silver; Tamiya Sky Blue, Clear Green; and Testers Enamel steel for dry brushing. Light weathering was done with Tamiya pigments on the feet and wing flaps. Completed kit was clearcoated in FFA over testers flat for a semi-gloss finish.
